چکیده

Objectives and Methodology: A critical-mass research effort will explore and advance theoretical understanding of the causal agents, coupling, scale -interactions, and particle kinetics of magnetospheric and ionospheric variability in the ultra-low-frequency regime (from less than 1 mHz up to 1 Hz). Magnetotail oscillations (periods of 10-60 min), magnetospheric boundary and dayside merging pulsations (1-10 min), geomagnetic cavity and field line eigenmodes (0.5-10 min), and auroral resonator/cavity dynamics (5-30 sec) will be investigated via

A Review of Low Frequency Electromagnetic Wave Phenomena Related to Tropospheric-Ionospheric Coupling Mechanisms

Investigation of coupling mechanisms between the troposphere and the ionosphere requires a multidisciplinary approach involving several branches of atmospheric sciences, from meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, and fulminology to aeronomy, plasma physics, and space weather. In this work, we review low frequency electromagnetic wave propagation in the Earthionosphere cavity from a troposphere-io...

Introduction to the thematic series “Coupling of the magnetosphere–ionosphere system”

This thematic series contains 4 papers mostly presented at the 2016 AOGS meeting in Beijing. The four papers investigate four key regions in the magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling process: mid-tail magnetosphere, near-Earth magnetosphere, inner magnetosphere, and the polar ground region. Guo et al. (Geosci Lett 4:18, 2017) study the current system in reconnection region using 2.5D particle-in-ce...

Physics of Magnetospheric Variability

Many widely used methods for describing and understanding the magnetosphere are based on balance conditions for quasi-static equilibrium (this is particularly true of the classical theory of magnetosphere/ionosphere coupling, which in addition presupposes the equilibrium to be stable); they may therefore be of limited applicability for dealing with time-variable phenomena as well as for determi...

Terrestrial agents in the realm of space storms: Missions study oxygen ions

Observations from two recent space missions, the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers (AMPTE) and the Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES), demonstrated that magnetospheric O + ions originating in the ionosphere are important terrestrial agents in geospace. In other words, the two missions showed that ionized oxygen escaping from the upper atmosphere, can play a c...

Coupling of a global MHD code and an inner magnetospheric model: Initial results

[1] This paper describes the coupling of BATS-R-US (Block Adaptive Tree Solar-wind Roe-type Upwind Scheme), a magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) code representing the Earth’s global magnetosphere and its coupling to the ionosphere and solar wind, and the Rice Convection Model (RCM), which represents the inner magnetosphere and its coupling to the ionosphere. The MHD code provides a time-evolving magnet...
